After losing kicker Jake Moody for the foreseeable future, the San Francisco 49ers are set to bring in a familiar face to take his place.
The 49ers inked veteran free agent Matthew Wright to a contract on Tuesday, a source briefed on the decision said. The move came just under 48 hours after Moody went down with a high-ankle sprain during Sunday’s 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
After the initial diagnosis revealed Moody’s condition, the team wasted little time searching for a stopgap — bringing in four kickers on Monday for a tryout.
Wright, 28, will now down a Niners jersey on game day after a brief stint on the practice squad last September while Moody recovered from a quad strain. Thursday’s Week 6 tilt against the Seattle Seahawks will be Wright’s first action since a one-game appearance for the Carolina Panthers last season.
An undrafted free agent out of UCF in 2019, Wright has played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and Panthers. He boasts a 40-of-47 stat line on field goal attempts and a 35-of-37 mark on extra-point attempts in 23 games.
