Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip retires from football

Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip has retired from football at the age of 33.

Matip — who was capped 27 times for Cameroon between 2010 and 2015 — had been a free agent since his contract at Liverpool expired earlier this year.

The centre-back made 201 appearances across eight seasons at Anfield, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League in that time.

Matip joined Liverpool as a free agent in 2016 from Schalke, where he spent a total of 16 years and made 258 first-team appearances.

The defender was part of the Schalke team that reached the semi-final stage of the Champions League in 2010-11, winning the DFB-Pokal in the same season and the DFL-Supercup at the start of the following campaign.

Matip — who was also eligible to play for Germany — represented Cameroon in both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, but made his last appearance for the African nation in 2015 and rejected further call-ups to the national team.
