Located in Refshaleoen, this bakery is a little further from the city center but is well worth the trek. A converted warehouse turned café, Lille Bakery pumps out pastries, baguette sandwiches, and sweet delights. Head here on the weekend to rub shoulders with the locals who spill out onto the front courtyard, and make sure to time your visit just before lunch, when savory quiches and bouncy focaccia slices hit the counter.

In 2018, Richard Hart, then head baker at Tartine, San Francisco’s most beloved pastry shop, packed up and moved to Copenhagen. Several years later, Hart has now established a fiercely loyal local following along with a smattering of stores all over the city, where loaves of sourdough and rye fly off the shelves. Just as tempting are the daily-changing buns and bakes, from cheddar chive scones to crusty cardamom croissants and seasonal fruit pastries. While most of their locations offer a single counter groaning with baked goods, head to their original bakehouse in the city’s meatpacking district to try the whole hog, where you’ll find pastry enthusiasts sprawled across the crumb-scattered tables outside.
What to order: almond pain au chocolat
At Rug Bakery, the in-house bakehouse at glossy five-star hotel Villa Copenhagen, the counter is piled high with freshly baked goods each morning. Here, you’ll find all manner of cardamom buns, croissants, and chocolate chip cookies on offer here. Guests spill into the adjoining café come lunchtime for fluffy French toast and folded eggs drowned in truffle shavings and brown butter.
What to order: cube croissant
A love letter to good coffee and pastries, Andersen & Maillard is the brainchild of pro barista Hans Kristian Andersen and former Noma chef Milton Abel. With three locations across the city, the duo have cultivated a loyal following who clamor daily for their perfectly laminated croissants and expertly poured flat whites. Make a beeline for their sunlit bakery in Nordhavn and make sure to try one of everything. Canelés, dense brownies, crumbly pastries, and their famous cube croissants (filled with pistachio or coffee cream) are all washed down with an excellent cup of coffee.
