Japan Railways’ Tadami Line in Tohoku

Running through the majestic Tadami River valley in the Tohoku region between Japan’s Fukushima and Niigata prefectures, the Tadami Line offers breathtaking views of rolling mountains, dense pine forests, and dramatic river gorges all year round. But in winter, when the region is dusted in a layer of white, passengers are treated to some of the most striking scenery. Gliding by the windows are ice-laden evergreen boughs and frosted peaks worthy of a snow globe. But the showstopper views come as the train traverses the Daiichi Tadami River Bridge. The graceful arched bridge is an iconic lookout point with reflections of the wintry landscape in the aquamarine-hued river below. The train makes a photo-op stop near the bridge so passengers have time to fully absorb the natural marvels. The Tadami Line stretches nearly 84 miles through 36 cities and towns from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station in Fukushima Prefecture to Koide Station in Niigata Prefecture, with plenty of interesting sites along the way, including several natural hot springs for a relaxing outdoor soak.

Amtrak’s California Zephyr

One of the most extraordinary winter routes is located right here in the US. Amtrak’s California Zephyr showcases undulating terrains piled high with drifts of snow. Ride the full line all the way from Chicago to San Francisco in a roomette, or grab an affordable coach seat on the most picturesque section from Denver through San Francisco. This stretch of track will whisk you through the imposing scenery of the Rockies and onward to the snow-laced Sierra Nevada range. Along the way, you’ll wind through winter landscapes that include white-frosted canyons and towering pines. Eagle-eyed passengers might even spot large wildlife like elk roaming outside the windows. Notable stops along the way include Salt Lake City and Truckee, California, a gateway town to Lake Tahoe. As a long distance route, the Zephyr is equipped with a true dining car serving breakfast, lunch, and three-course dinners with dishes like Amtrak’s signature railroad french toast, flat iron steak, and chocolate spoon cake.

The Bernina Express through Italy and Switzerland

Immerse yourself in Alpine wonders aboard one of Europe’s most spellbinding train routes. On its way from Chur, Switzerland, to Tirano, Italy, the candy-apple-red cars of the Bernina Express weave through the jagged peaks of the Alps past crystalline lakes, towering glaciers, and fir-covered hills. The four-hour route runs on the UNESCO-listed Rhaetian Railway, enshrined for its architectural and engineering achievements that are “in harmony with the landscapes through which they pass.” Expect dizzying views of the mountains above and valleys below—the train crosses 196 bridges over the course of the full route, including the iconic Landwasser Viaduct, more than 200 feet above ground.

The two-night journey includes a New Year’s Eve party on board the train featuring a dinner of local Peruvian cuisine. Canadian Snow Train

A trans-Canadian adventure awaits on this Snow Train tour aboard the country’s VIA Rail line. Offered by Vacations By Rail, the four-night itinerary begins in Vancouver and weaves through some of the most remote wilderness in the country before terminating in Toronto. You’ll wind your way through five provinces, chugging past the Canadian Rockies, snow-swept forests, charming towns, and frozen lakes, taking in all the sights from the domed observation car. “Winter is an ideal time to travel as the rates are lower, the trains are less crowded, and the staff has more time to share their ‘tales of the rails’ with you,” according to Vacations By Rail’s site. The package also includes a one-night hotel stay in both Toronto and Vancouver, a first-class sleeper cabin, and meal service on board.
